The Fruit That Comes With Repentance

Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. (Matthew 3:8 ESV)

John the Baptist said this to the Pharisees who were listening to his sermon. His instruction was simple and yet it had a powerful impact for those who are willing to obey it. We know that God sent him to prepare the people’s hearts for the revelation of their Messiah. Sin created an attitude of hardness that had to be chipped away, and John was the pick axe that would help them receive God’s word.

The fruit in keeping with repentance is rich with truth and goodness because it lines up with God’s plan. We are able to discern good from evil, and we are open to the teaching of Scripture. Ultimately, the Holy Spirit will transform us to be more like Jesus. The Lord blesses his children with love, healing, guidance, and provision along with many other things. And yet, Satan continues to be the chief disruptor by trying to keep everyone from God. He would rather keep us spiritually blind and see our lives destroyed. However, the Lord would not have any of that; he doesn’t want anyone to perish. And so we have the gift of his Son, Jesus.

What would your life look like if you seriously devoted yourself to worshiping God, making him your treasure above everything and anyone else in this world? That answer will be unique for each one of us, a journey that is voluntary and requires a sincere faith. We will all reap some kind of fruit in our lifetime. Will it be the fruit of this world, or the fruit of God?
