And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” (Matthew‬ ‭14:28-33‬ ‭ESV‬‬)

Jesus’s disciples witnessed his miracles, but this one spooked them because they thought he was a ghost walking on water. Their fear was so great that they could not recognize him. Peter’s words, “Lord, if it is you” was an expression of doubt while all this was happening. And his doubt continued when the wind picked up, causing him to focus on the danger instead of Jesus.

Much of the adversity we face today has this same effect on us. Sometimes we wonder if Jesus is even with us while we are going through tough times. He certainly is and he invites us to walk towards him no matter what is happening. He encourages us to have faith in him because he will save us! Faith triumphs over fear because Jesus has control over everything and has the keys to eternal life. So there is no need to live in fear and worry. Instead, we should live freely and worship God. He knows what we need and he will provide.
