For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food. (Hebrews 5:12 ESV)
There are times when we backslide into the old habits of sin. When that happens, our spiritual growth is hindered because we have not yet mastered the basics of our faith. The doctrines of God, grace, and forgiveness are forgotten while we secretly wallow in regret, guilt, or shame. Most of the time our setbacks are caused by poor choices. We cave into temptation instead of yielding to God’s instruction. It’s like we want to be fools on purpose, always repeating the same lessons but never learning.
Do you not know that there is a banquet of wisdom and blessings that await us if we would just listen to what God has to say to us (Psalm 23:5)? One step of obedience leads to another until we achieve the next level of maturity and hopefully closer to Jesus. However, we render ourselves useless if we keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again. Don’t get stuck! Put off the old self and run with the new identity that has been given to you: Child of God (Ephesians 4:22-24).
