First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. (1 Timothy 2:1-2 ESV)
I really like these verses because it is a call for Christians to respond to the needs of a world filled with brokenness, oppression, and despair. While there is a lot of good that happens daily, Paul also reminds us to not ignore the issues that plague humanity. We are not charged to play it safe and be comfortable. We are to participate in the work of God.
One can misread these words and think that offering prayer is enough by listing supplications, intercessions, and thanksgivings. But this is not what he is saying. The Lord wants us to act in faith.
If we see a material need, then fulfill it. If someone is hurting and needs support, then intervene by asking what you can do to help. If you witness a blessing happening before your eyes, thank God and tell people all about it. You just never know what kind of influence or impact you will have if you stayed tuned into your community and respond in faith.
Ask God to give you the opportunities to demonstrate your faith and then act with immediate obedience. You will find that Christianity is an adventure guided by the hand of God. The question is whether you want to hang on to him for the journey. Be curious, and see what happens next!
